Raising Mugs & Awareness for Diabetes Awareness

As the spring approaches, more beer festivals will be popping up soon. An upcoming festival worth attending is the first annual Cask Ales Festival fundraiser to benefit The Barton Center for Diabetes Education Campership Program. The fundraiser, organized by Jen Davis and Karl MacDonald, takes place on Saturday, March 26 (3-7 p.m.) at The Mill Roadhouse in Westhampton Beach. The event will feature cask ales from Long Island breweries, live music, and raffles, including:10530657_10101064053166085_5084261540950521375_n

According to the American Diabetes Association, about 208,000 Americans under age 20 are estimated to have diagnosed diabetes. With type 1 diabetes on the rise, camps like the Barton Center educate children and their families on how to manage daily challenges living with diabetes, so they can live fuller and healthier lives.

Davis, who volunteers for Barton Camp, chose to co-organize this benefit because of the fundamental teachings she learned from the camp firsthand. “I love to fundraise for [Barton Center] camp because no child should be left behind due to their families inability to pay for them to go to camp,” Davis said. “These kids with type 1 diabetes need to be around other peers and adults/role models with type 1. Camp gives them an experience like no other.”

Tickets for this event can be purchased on EventBrite: $25 for general admission, $10 for designated drivers.
