Great South Bay Bayfest and Welcome

I am a newbie to craft beer. I’ve been a longtime drinker of the type without even knowing it – or really knowing what’s special.

So, when The Brew Babe asked if I would be interested in writing for The Outcask, I admit I hesitated. I have all the proper press credentials – B.A in journalism and several years writing under my belt covering everything from news and politics to music and comic books. So… why was I hesitant to take on the task of craft beer?

The answer lies in the same reason with what makes craft beer so great in the local setting; the niche community that rallies together like the days of yore bowling and bridge clubs once did. It is the sense of finding family in strangers, and one with really delicious results.

But my preconceived notions of a fenced-off community not keen on a voyeuristic stranger peering in were wiped away this a few weekends ago after attending my first official craft beer event. At the Great South Bay Bayfest in Bayshore, I was met with handshakes and topped off cold craft brews. I was delighted by summery peach ales, mouth-watering and decadent chocolate stouts and knee-wobbling whisky infused brews. My sampler glass was passed over time and time with a smile and the genuine notion of appreciation. Each time I was handed my glass there was a mutual transaction of appreciation. Thank you for noticing me, the brewer or volunteer said- but not vocally. Thank you for sharing your passion with me, was my unheard response as I smelled, sipped, and smiled with each drink. There is nothing that goes better with a craft beer than the strangers uniting under the balmy sky with great beer, fun music and greasy food truck delicacies.

On my way home from the event- my attitude changed – and my trepidation to write about the craft beer and cider industry faded like the thin layer of foam does. I am a fan and I now feel welcomed and baptized by the camaraderie and passion this community shares.

Across the country and much of the world, there a plenty of local brewers like the ones that exist in our tri-state area. They want to get together and create something beautiful. Their passion incorporates being eco-friendly and appreciating the simple magic local grown ingredients often get looked over for. At the end of the party it’s not a popularity or money contest, it’s the hope that with great beer comes great memories for the individuals who were there.

I am excited for the coming summer months – to enjoy, learn and cover what is essentially driven by pure passion.

Cheers!
